Anpetu Was’te – good morning in the Lakota language. This month’s Lakota word is Wakinyan which means thunder in our Lakota language.  I chose this word because it is spring.  There are two very important ceremonies that the Lakota practice in the latter part of March and the first of April.  The Rosebud Sioux Tribe does a special ceremony every spring solstice welcoming back the Thunders.  It is a ceremony that is done in the Black Hills (which a very spiritual place for the Lakota).  Sinte Gleska University also does a ceremony in the Black Hills in early April and it is an annual wiping of the tears Ceremony for all of creation and is held at Pe Sla in the Black Hills.  This year it will be held on Saturday, April 7th, 2018.  This ceremony is held to wipe our tears of loss and prepare all of creation to welcome new life.  We provide transportation for our students to attend and it is also a very special ceremony to my people.
Spring is in the air, but unfortunately we are still experiencing some snow storms, I hope it passes soon so that our students will be able to breathe the brisk spring air and experience more outside time.  I think it will help them to better prepare for finals that are soon approaching

     What Our Donors Are Saying

“We had a wonderful time there visiting the facilities, visiting the students, visiting the teachers. And it’s very exciting because this year they were able to, through our fundraising, shore up the idea of bilingual education, so they have these little ones learning Lakota and English simultaneously. This seems to be a very central piece to the spirit of the tribe, that the numbers of fluent Lakota speakers have dwindled, which is not a good feeling for the spirit and psyche of the Lakota. So bringing in this very youngest generation and being able to educate them in a bilingual environment is a very hopeful and very progressive thing to do.”
