okate/okata

Hihanni Was’te – good morning in my Lakota language. This month’s Lakota word is okate/okata which means hot and our weather here on the Rosebud reservation has been okate/okata to say the least.  It has been brutally hot this summer.
I wanted to share a very prestigious and esteemed honor that our President, Lionel R. Bordeaux recently received on July 27, 2017 in Toronto, Canada at the World’s Indigenous People’s Education Conference.  This is the largest Indian ?  and is held every three years.  President Bordeaux was asked to speak and was honored by WINHU.  WINHU stands for Worlds Indigenous Nation Higher University.  We are very proud of President Bordeaux here at Sinte Gleska.  I felt compelled to share this distinguished honor with all of you.  If you would like to read more on this honor by WINHU to President Bordeaux you can do so on our SGU website.
We are also waiting in anticipation as our Student Union construction is nearly completed, however, it will not be in mid-August as I said in my previous blog.  This delay was due to unforeseen circumstances, but we are hoping for mid-September now.  None-the-less construction is moving forward and looking good.
Just a reminder that SGU we are nearing our 2017 graduation and working diligently getting ready for our this year’s graduation commencement and also our Rosebud Reservation’s big 141st  celebration.
It is a busy month and I will be glad when our classes start, the weather becomes cooler and we can get back to normal, so to speak.  However, it is kind of a little sad for me as well, as summer will be coming to an end and fall is approaching.
Talk to you next month and please go to the Sinte Gleska University web site and you can review more of Sinte Gleska’s information/news!
Wopila Tanka!
(A big thank you)

     What Our Donors Are Saying

“We had a wonderful time there visiting the facilities, visiting the students, visiting the teachers. And it’s very exciting because this year they were able to, through our fundraising, shore up the idea of bilingual education, so they have these little ones learning Lakota and English simultaneously. This seems to be a very central piece to the spirit of the tribe, that the numbers of fluent Lakota speakers have dwindled, which is not a good feeling for the spirit and psyche of the Lakota. So bringing in this very youngest generation and being able to educate them in a bilingual environment is a very hopeful and very progressive thing to do.”
